Stach est un grand garçon malheureux, livré à lui-même, et dont les seules ressources sont de « chaparder » du charbon dans les trains allemands en gare de Varsovie. Un jour il trouve enfin du travail comme apprenti menuisier et découvrira un monde nouveau parmi ses compagnons de l'entreprise et auprès de jeunes qu'il retrouve à la sortie. Il apprend qu'un philosophe s'est penché sur le problème de l'exploitation de l'ouvrier par le patron capitaliste puis il découvre la valeur de l'opposition à l'occupation allemande à travers les harangues d'une fille énergique et décidée : « une fille a parlé » et Stach découvre l'amour en même temps que l'idéal patriotique. Bien que le thème principal ici traité soit l'héroïque résistance polonaise à l'occupant nazi, ce film, d'inspiration marxiste, comporte des éléments subversifs tendant à démontrer l'efficacité de l'idéologie communiste à laquelle l'auteur oppose un christianisme désuet et inopérant.

Highlander Jasiek used to be a smuggler, now he is a soldier of the Border Protection Forces, serving in his homeland, in the Tatra Mountains. Under the influence of the educational work of his superiors, as well as his love for Halka, he becomes a righteous citizen. He contributes to preventing the smuggling of valuable works of art abroad organized by a Polish aristocrat and carried out by a gang.
