Les années 80 sont entre autres celles de la frime, où le look et la richesse affirmée sont de mise. Le culte de l'apparence devient primordial et la recherche du superficiel et du «fun» offrent un tremplin à des créateurs talentueux comme Jean Paul Gaultier, Sonia Rykiel ou Thierry Mugler. C'est aussi l'époque où le clip fait son apparition, révolution lancée par la chaîne américaine MTV. Les émissions musicales se multiplient, profitant de la libération des ondes et de la création de nombreuses radios libres. Enfin, c'est l'arrivée de la gauche au pouvoir, avec l'élection de François Mitterrand en 1981. Des images de l'époque et les témoignages de ceux qui ont été de grands acteurs de ces années, comme Philippe Starck, Chantal Thomass ou Harlem Désir, offrent de revivre la folie des années 80.
