Teresa et Elaine habitent a Kirby, petite agglomération a quelques kilomètres de Liverpool. Teresa travaille dans une fabrique de poulets, Elaine ne travaille pas. Apres avoir fauche le porte-monnaie d'un malabar elles partent a Liverpool. Elles rencontrent dans un bar deux marins russes. Pour Elaine c'est l'amour et elle décide de rejoindre Peter en Russie. Tout le monde s'oppose a son départ alors elle écrit a Brejnev qui lui envoie un billet d'avion. Un film dans la veine de "My Beautiful Laundrette" qui sont la preuve d'une "nouvelle vague" britannique.

Expert safecracker Arthur Clutten masterminds heists for a criminal syndicate he belongs to. But after witnessing the brutal methods of persuasion being meted out by gang leader, Ignatius Smith Clutten decides to quit. But he realizes the gang would sooner see him killed than quitting. After stealing some documents incriminating Smith and his boss, Edward Ross, Clutten then puts his family in hiding and goes on the run...but his daughter has been kidnapped by the gang and a hitman has been hired and is close to finding Clutten.

Two guys meet, one American, a deserter from the US army, one Brit, and they are drawn together by their mutual love of Soul music. As they struggle to make ends meet in a depressed economy, and to hold together their financially battered families, they are harrassed by the petty bureaucrats of the DHSS. But the lumbering investigational juggernaut is, both comically and tragically, guided by drivers with only a provisional license.
