Agnese lives in an isolated house in the middle of the hills. She cultivates her garden in the sunlight and lives a quiet life of routine in the company of a mysterious guest she keeps locked in a room in the darkness of her house.

Paolo and Maria are two ordinary newlyweds who live just outside their town. One morning Paolo goes out to buy some fish and doesn't come home. Down in the main square, a woman has had a valuable necklace snatched by a teenager on a lark. When the thief gets away, Paolo, whose path has crossed that of the woman and the townspeople, is accused by the victim of pulling off the heist. He tries to run away but is picked up by a cop and taken to a basement, where the policeman orders him not to move and await his return.

One night Leonardo, a young concierge working in a suburban hotel, receives a visit from a mysterious couple looking for a place to stay. The boy will soon discover that love can hide a dark side.

Dario is a boy with disabilities who cannot speak or walk but can communicate using a computer through Facilitated Communication with the help of Ada, his “facilitator.” He lives alone with his father, who has recently discovered that he has a severe heart condition and will need to undergo delicate heart surgery. Concerned about his son’s future, as the boy could be left alone in the world if the surgery goes wrong, the man turns to a social worker. The social worker advises him to draft a “Life Project” together with Dario, a document that outlines the son’s needs and wishes for the time when the father will no longer be there.
