Dans un Moscou futuriste des années 1930, cette adaptation du roman de Boulgakov suit un écrivain célèbre, déchu après la censure de sa pièce sur Ponce Pilate. Rejeté, il rencontre Marguerite, une femme mariée qui devient sa muse et l'inspire à écrire un nouveau roman. Dans son récit, Satan visite Moscou et y provoque des événements surnaturels. Marguerite, transformée en sorcière, retrouve son amant après la mort, dans un ballet macabre entre réalité et magie.

A young man wakes up in the morgue. He has no clothes on, he doesn't know how he got here, but most importantly, he doesn't remember who he is. In his mind, there are only incoherent flashes that do not add up to a complete picture, and his life in the real world resembles an incessant nightmare – a prison from which it is impossible to escape. But is this prison real or is it just a projection of his consciousness?
