De père américain et de mère japonaise, Anthony, employé discret, vit à Tokyo avec sa femme Yuriko et leur fils Tom. Depuis que sa mère est décédée d'un cancer, son père, qui travaille dans le milieu scientifique, lui fait passer, ainsi qu'à son fils, un examen médical mensuel. Sur le chemin qui le ramène à la maison, Tom se fait renverser par une voiture et meurt sous les yeux d'Anthony. Celui-ci, très ému voit son corps muté, ses cellules devenant métalliques. Alors qu'il en apprend davantage sur son histoire les épreuves qui ont marqué sa famille, Anthony se transforme en une masse métallique, une arme humaine dévastatrice.
