Porto, 1618. L'Inquisition envoie Sebastião Noronha poursuivre la persécution des Juifs portugais. Toute la population est exhortée à dénoncer les hérésies sous peine d'excommunication. Dans une ville où une grande partie de la population est d'origine juive, les frictions entre les autorités judiciaires et la visite de l'Inquisition atteignent un point de non-retour. Sa famille et sa communauté étant en danger, António Álvares, un marchand de Porto, décide d'élaborer un plan d'évasion pour lui et les siens.
