Dante Lazarescu, un vieil homme, partage son petit appartement de Bucarest avec ses trois chats. Un soir, des crampes et des maux de têtes l'inquiètent. Il appelle une ambulance. Personne ne vient. Ses voisins affluent, plus préoccupés par leurs petits problèmes que par la détresse de Dante. Une ambulance finit par arriver. L'ambulancière livre un diagnostic alarmant et emmène le malade sur-le-champ. Dans un premier hôpital, le médecin de garde formule une autre hypothèse. Dante boit trop. L'arrivée massive des victimes d'un accident de bus bouscule le service. L'ambulancière conduit Dante dans un deuxième hôpital, pour qu'il y passe un examen neurologique…
