Ils sont jeunes et viennent de tous les horizons. La passion de la danse les a réunis pour une année au sein d'une école réputée. Ils partagent un même rêve : devenir membre de l'un des ballets les plus prestigieux du monde. Pour avoir une chance de réussir, ces aspirants danseurs vont devoir tout donner, aller au bout d'eux-mêmes sans jamais aucune certitude en retour... Chacun à sa façon va tenter d'approcher ce but en suivant les cours du brillant Coope, le maestro en la matière. Tous hélas n'y parviendront pas...

Director-choreographer Susan Stroman and librettist John Weidman construct an evening of three dance plays. The first deals with a "swinger" couple and their servant, whose sexual games suddenly change; the second finds an unhappy 1950s wife imagining herself the belle of a restaurant she attends with her abusive husband; and the final piece allows a suicidal executive to find life again chasing after a mysterious girl in a dance bar.
