Lily is an academically brilliant girl from a poor district in NYC who lives with her unavailable single mother and chronically ill younger sister Winona. Alison emmène son petit frère, Kevin, à la marina. Il a été convié à faire une sortie en bouée par un camarade de l’école, Jim, dont la mère, Susan Conrad, est la directrice du Beach club. Sur la plage, Alison retrouve son amie Rachel et son petit ami, Carson, le frère de Jim. Durant la sortie bouée, Jim et ses copains se moquent de Kevin et ils détachent la bouée sur laquelle il se trouve, l’éloignant ainsi du bateau. Il se fait alors attaquer par un requin. Alison, qui le voit depuis le rivage, se jette à l’eau pour le sauver, mais elle est elle aussi prise pour cible par le squale. Heureusement, le pilote du bateau, Daniel, plonge et sauve Alison et Kevin. Mais étrangement, le jeune homme s’éloigne à l’arrivée de la police.
