L'ingénieur Los réceptionne un curieux message qui semble venir de l'espace. Déçu par sa femme Natacha qui se laisse séduire par la bourgeoisie russe, Los s'évade en rêvant de la planète Mars. Il imagine une société totalitaire où il pourrait mener la révolution, et tomber amoureux de la reine Aelita.

Alors que la ville de Moscou accueille un grand tournoi d'échecs, toute la ville semble gagnée par la fièvre des échecs. Un jeune homme semble particulièrement atteint : il joue seul chez lui, a des mouchoirs à carreaux, des chaussettes à carreaux, un béret à carreaux, et une multitude d'échiquiers dans ses poches... Il oublie le rendez-vous que sa fiancée lui avait donné ; arrivant en retard, il semble quand même ne penser qu'aux échecs... Elle le congédie, et va se promener : mais partout les gens ne parlent que d'échecs, ne jouent qu'aux échecs...

The film's plot is based on the real murder of the Soviet diplomatic courier Theodor Nette abroad. The pouch of the Soviet diplomat, which is stolen by British spies, is taken away by the sailors of a ship sailing to Leningrad who deliver it to the authorities.
