There is a big charity function at the house of Mrs. Cheyney and a lot of society is present. With her rich husband, deceased, rich old Lord Elton and playboy Lord Arthur Dilling are both very interested in the mysterious Fay. Invited to the house of Mrs. Webley, Fay is again the center of attention for Arthur and Elton with her leaning towards stuffy old Elton. When Arthur sees Charles, Fay's Butler, lurking in the gardens, he remembers that Charles was a thief caught in Monte Carlo and he figures that Fay may be more interested in the pearls of Mrs. Webley, which she is. After Fay takes the pearls, but before she can toss them out the window, she is caught by Arthur who is very disappointed in how things are turning out.

Ann Barton, the daughter of a once-wealthy family, is forced to clerk at the cigar counter of a village hotel, where she meets James McDonald, a breezy, handsome salesman. Ann soon revenges herself on her aunt by placing both her aunt and herself in compromising positions.

Joe Merrill, son of the millionaire owner of a chain of 5 and 10 cent stores, poses as Joe Grant, and takes a job in the stockroom of one of his father's stores, to prove that he can be a success without his father's influence. There he meets stockroom girl Maggie Johnson, and they fall in love. This causes problems, because Mrs. Merrill had planned for her son to marry Millicent Rogers, a high society girl.

Diana, Neville et David sont des amis d'enfance de la riche aristocratie anglaise. Diana et Neville sont amoureux l'un de l'autre mais le père de celui-ci s'y oppose, n'approuvant pas le style de vie de la famille Merrick. Neville est ainsi envoyé en Égypte pour mener des affaires et devenir encore plus riche. Pendant ce temps, David, qui était également amoureux de Diana et qui est très ami avec son frère Jeffry, épouse celle-ci, après qu'elle a attendu en vain deux années durant le retour de Neville. Pendant leur voyage de noces à Paris, David se suicide sans que l'on sache vraiment pourquoi: peut-être était-il très affecté de l'amour qu'il ne recevait pas en retour de sa femme Diana. Celle-ci ne révèle pas aux familles concernées les raisons de l'acte malheureux de son mari. Jeffry, dont l'affection pour David était ambiguë, reproche amèrement à sa sœur la disparition de son ami. Jeffry sombre dans l'alcool et sa sœur s'installe dans le gotha européen.
