Basé sur le roman éponyme de Nonaka Tomoso. Tsubame Ôishi est une adolescente de 14 ans. Lycéenne, elle tombe amoureuse de l'un de ses camarades, Tôru Asakura, qui habite également dans son quartier. Vivant avec son père Toshio et sa belle-mère Asako, la vie semble sourire à la jeune fille. Mais ce sentiment de bonheur disparaît le jour où elle apprend que sa belle-mère est enceinte. Se sentant exclue à cause de cette grossesse inattendue, et fâchée de ne pas savoir comment avouer ses sentiments à Tôru, Tsubame ne trouve du réconfort que sur le toit de son école de calligraphie.
