The business of the Donato family, an Italian-Argentine criminal organization, is a success. They have bought judges, lawyers and even politicians, but after a kidnapping goes wrong, a civil war starts in the Donato crime family. Based on a real event of the Galiffi crime family, a real Italian pro-Fascism mafia that conquered in the 1920's and 1930's the city of Rosario, the Chicago of Latin America.

A woman's voice says she was wife to Renzo Franchi and Carlos Gardel (1890-1935), Argentina's great tango singer. People say she's crazy. Her story unfolds. Buenos Aires, 1933: Juana Romero, a seamstress who lives for the music of Gardel, dumps her boyfriend Gustavo for Renzo, a singer who looks like Gardel. She insists that his trio performs Gardel's tangos, which leads to Renzo recording a Ford commercial when Gardel himself is overbooked. The trio, with Joanna in tow, goes on an ill-fated tour of points north. The couple breaks up: she goes home and he tries to get to New York. Mario, “el Rulo,” is a wanderer who travels the country giving artistic performances. One day he passes through the town of Carlos, a municipal employee who dreams of being an artist. A friendship is born between the two of them, and Carlos leaves it all behind to follow Mario.
