It has been arranged between the fathers that their children shall marry. When the young people meet, the intended husband, who is somewhat rakish in appearance, falls desperately in love with the girl, but she spurns him. He bribes two young men to kidnap the girl, in order that he may play the hero and rescue her. However, he does not know that one of the "kidnappers" is the young man whom Mabel really is in love with, and his confidential friend, who, of course, delight in the deception.

Hubby and wifey are in love, but he's henpecked by her mother. A nip of whiskey gives him Dutch courage, and he storms out, declaring he won't be a domestic slave anymore. He heads for a park bench where a photographer mistakes him for a seated woman's sweetheart. The tintype of the two of them falls into the hands of the woman's husband, whose jealous rage frightens our hero. He abruptly leaves town, telling wifey he'll be away on business. Wifey doesn't need her house while he's away, so, unknown to hubby, she moves in with mom and rents the house to the couple from the park. When our hero returns home sooner than expected, the renter has another attack of jealousy.

Charlot et Chester se battent pour plaire à leur logeuse. Celle-ci, lassée par leur numéro, s'éloigne, laissant les deux hommes se chamailler.Au parc, Charlot croise une jeune fille brune qu'il essaie de séduire. Mais il doit déguerpir lorsque son petit ami arrive. Pendant ce temps, Chester a facilement conquis une jeune fille blonde. Lorsque il s'en aperçoit, désespéré, Charlot tente de se suicider en se jetant dans le lac, mais un policier le retient au dernier moment. Il décide alors de prendre sa revanche sur Chester, mais en voulant le rejoindre il croise de nouveau la route du petit ami de la jeune fille brune, toujours mécontent. Après un échange verbal virulent, Charlot balance le jeune homme dans le lac, et retourne voir Chester pour l'assommer. Les deux jeunes filles s'en vont alors et entrent dans un Nickelodeon.

Charlot est accessoiriste dans un music-hall. Le spectacle du soir met en scène, entre autres, le duo de danseuses «The Goo-Goo Sisters», l'homme-fort «Garlico» et le couple de vaudeville «George Ham et Lena Fat».Dans un premier temps, Charlot et son vieux collègue doivent faire face aux caprices des différents artistes avant et pendant les répétitions. Les deux compagnons doivent notamment transporter les lourdes malles de Garlico et gérer les jalousies dues aux attributions de loge.Vient ensuite le moment du spectacle. Le premier numéro, celui des Goo-Goo Sisters, est mis à mal par le vieux machiniste qui rencontre des problèmes avec les rideaux, et par Charlot qui n'hésite pas à monter sur scène pour observer de plus près les deux jolies jeunes sœurs. Les numéros suivants se succèdent alors qu'une bagarre éclate en coulisses. Le spectacle se transforme alors en une véritable cacophonie que Charlot décide d'abréger en arrosant toute la troupe ainsi que le public.

A government official staying in a hotel puts some important secret papers in the hotel safe. A ring of spies out to get the papers manages to steal them from the safe, and a lady government agent enlists the help of the hotel's bumbling bellhop in getting back the papers and breaking up the spy ring.
