Klara Novak s'adonne à une correspondance épistolaire avec un homme dont elle s'est éprise mais qu'elle n'a jamais rencontré non plus. Deux personnes qui entretiennent une relation amoureuse par correspondance ignorent qu’elles se côtoient tous les jours sur leur lieu de travail... et se chamaillent sans cesse. Alfred découvre bientôt que cette mystérieuse inconnue des lettres n'est autre que Klara, l'employée du magasin dont il ne peut souffrir. Sans révéler à celle-ci la vérité, il cherche à se rapprocher d'elle et à s'en faire aimer.
