Printemps 1905, Sabina Spielrein est internée pour hystérie et anorexie par ses parents. Le jeune médecin Carl Gustave Jung décide de prendre en charge la patiente, et d'expérimenter sur elle une nouvelle méthode révélée par un certain Sigmund Freud: la psychanalyse.
