Nous sommes en octobre 1998, dans l'état du Wyoming. Matthew Shepard, 21 ans, passe confortablement la soirée en compagnie d'amis gays dans un pub. L'étudiant sera retrouvé par le plus grand des hasards par un jogger, après 18 heures d'abandon dans le froid. Transporté d'urgence à l'hôpital, il restera cinq jours dans le coma avant de succomber à ses blessures.
