Milan, le 12 décembre 1969, une bombe explose à la Banque Nationale d'Agriculture sur la Piazza Fontana, faisant 17 morts et 88 blessés. Le commissaire Luigi Calabresi, chargé de l'enquête, s'oriente vers les milieux d'extrême gauche et d'extrême droite mais peu à peu, il a la certitude qu'il faut aller chercher les responsables dans les hautes sphères politiques. A ce jour, personne n'a été déclaré coupable dans l'attentat de Piazza Fontana qui reste l'une des affaires les plus sombres de l'histoire contemporaine d'Italie.

St. Petersburg, 1860. After a member of the imperial family is assassinated, Fyodor Dostoevsky meets a man institutionalized in a mental asylum — who confesses taking part in the terrorist plot and reveals that his fellow conspirators are planning to kill another of the Tsar's relatives. Plagued by debts and struggling to finish his latest novel, Dostoevsky must act fast to call off the attack.

The film is the personal story of a protagonist of our times and traces Carlo Martini's actions and thoughts, as he has remained faithful to its vocation and ideals. Through dramatic events (terrorism, Tangentopoli, labor crisis, conflict, loneliness) Carlo Martini interpreted losses and concerns of the people, who saw a free man and a non dogmatic prince of the Gospel Church. Thanks to the authenticity of his testimony he has been a reference point for believers and non-believers, a prophet of hope, a forerunner of Pope Francis.
