1989, le quartier américain du Kreuzberg, à Berlin-Ouest. Des étudiants et des artistes y vivent comme des bohémiens, fréquentant les bars du coin. Parmi eux, Frank Lehmann, surnommé "Herr Lehmann" par ses amis, bientôt trente ans : patron de bar, il passe son temps avec Karl, son fidèle acolyte, sculpteur contemporain. Il tombe amoureux d'une cuisinière, Katrin. Mais pour lui, rien n'est simple. Il ne préfère pas dire à se sparents qu'il ne fait rien de ses journées. Le jour de son anniversaire arrive et un événement va changer sa vie. Nous sommes le 9 novembre 1989...

They meet in the realm of the dead and together they visit familiar places and their loved ones. By debating their past with each other, they become close and fall in love. Because of their feelings they get the chance to return to life for twelve hours in order to prove the depth love they share.

Five years later, the project of the idealistic educator failed after bloody attacks of the French. In retrospect, the disappointed Pestalozzi experiences the last few months with "his" children.
