Les éventuels progrès technologiques qui pourraient découler d’une rencontre avec les Martiens intéressent grandement les soviétiques, qui payent Franz Calder pour espionner les messages qui s’échangent entre les Américains et Mars. La panique s’empare des habitants de la Terre qui pensent que ces découvertes marquent la fin de leur mode de vie...
