1941, le ghetto de Varsovie. Filip, un jeune juif polonais, et sa bien-aimée Sarah s'apprêtent à se produire dans un cabaret pour gagner leur vie. Lors de la première, une fusillade a lieu, au cours de laquelle Sara, ainsi que les proches de Philip assis dans le public sont tués. Deux ans plus tard, l'homme travaille comme serveur dans le restaurant d'un hôtel haut de gamme de Francfort.

Sixteen-year-old Jann shields his mother Lina from the outside world in a system that has been established over the years. When Jann falls in love with Selma, who is a year older than him, he is less and less able to keep his family secret. Selma and Jann's love causes his previous world to collapse, but ultimately it also gives him the strength he needs to claim a new place for himself in life.

Two schoolboys who have just discovered a mutual attraction are witnesses to the murder of three gang members. Although Jan and Lukas are seen, they are able to flee, but the fear of being found by the murderer starts to weigh heavily on them. The local police chief Helen (Nicolette Krebitz) is investigating the case, along with her Munich colleague Corinna and her new boss Roman Berg. In a mix of fear and embarrassment, the teenagers hope that staying silent will keep them alive.
