After six years as a guest of the state, mob hit man Jason Reed wants nothing more than to get an honest job and spend time with his young son, Tommy. He is not ten steps outside of the prison before being greeted by Keither, an old crony anxious to pick up where they left off. While out for a drive with his son, Jason saves a young woman from a gun wielding thug, not realizing that he has just managed to ruin Keith's plans to recover some stolen heroin. While fending off various retaliatory attacks from his old buddies, Jason must also deal with his ex-wife, a reformed drug addict who has returned from out of nowhere intent on re-uniting with Tommy.

Floyd has never won Lotto. Nor has he won at OTB. He's a middle-aged flunk floundering from temp jobs to performing magic tricks in the street to earn a buck. His life consists of his therapist, his nursing home bound mother and B.S. sessions with other late bloomers. But on the day before his 40th birthday, he decides to take charge of his life and pursue his first career as a magician. He soon realizes, however, that due to his allergic reaction to rabbits and ineptitude for children, his future in birthday party magic seemed quite ephemeral. Upon meeting Lulu, another life wanderer, Floyd steps up his act for adults and decides to supplement his income by incorporating a wallet disappearing trick into the act with her as his assistant.

College freshman Krishna Reddy, who has never cared for his Indian-American cultural heritage, looks forward to a new life on campus but is surprised to find that he has been assigned Indian roommates.

Five strangers are brought together by two seemingly unrelated events in this independent drama. As an angry black cross-dresser is brutally beaten in an altercation with New York City police, five people look on at the incident. Busy businesswoman Genna thinks little of it, and she considers transvestitism to be a sexist parody of women. Woronoff is a gay rights activist who is appalled by the attack, even though he's unaware of the facts. Sadie is an elderly woman caring for her invalid husband, but she finds this attack on a stranger hard to ignore. Malcolm, a doorman at the building where the man was attacked, regards the victim as a disgrace to the black community, without examining his own place in African-American culture.
