Bragana tient un café-garage sur la route qui longe le Po. Gino, chômeur et vagabond, demande du travail à Bragana. D'abord méfiant, celui-ci le prend en amitié quand il découvre ses talents de mécanicien. Gino a d'autres talents et devient l'amant de la femme de Bragana, Giovanna. Très vite ils vont se débarrasser du mari gênant. Mais ce meurtre transformera leur passion en enfer.

La dramatique histoire d'amour de Carmen, une bohémienne, et de Don José, le brigadier de dragons. Par amour pour la belle, Don José devient déserteur. Mais celle-ci le quitte pour le séduisant toréador Lucas. Déchiré par sa jalousie, le soldat commet l'irréparable en tuant Carmen.

The baron of Santafusca, descended from a noble family, leads a dissipated life. To pay debts he is forced to sell his house. He tries to steal from the house of a very rich priest and, surprised during the theft, he kills the priest, and then throws the body in an abandoned well. He continues his life of revelries and luxury, until the remorse for the crime trigger a process of self-destruction. The nightmares of the baron, tormented by the only evidence left of the murder, the hat of the priest ,drags him into a daring and hallucinated series of ups and downs to the brink of insanity and jail.
