FRAGMENT | An apparition appears when the threat of foreclosure looms over the family estate. Solicitor Bang is a rich man with financial power over a dowager baroness and her estate. However, Bang also wants power over the baroness’ daughter Lucy, whose heart belongs to the family doctor Sperling. Bang threatens to foreclose the estate if Lucy doesn’t marry him. The night before the auction, a ghost appears to Doctor Sperling and leads him to a chest in the basement. But is it a coffer or coffin? (Stumfilm.dk)

Things are going well for the young ship’s mate Willy. He has just completed his exams with excellent results and, what is more, he has become engaged to his great love, Lilly, a shipowner’s daughter. Her scorned suitor, Mr Bang, a merchant, whose proposal to Lilly was rejected shortly before, is incandescent with rage and hatches a malicious plan to get his rival out of the way. One evening, he lures Willy out to gamble and drink in an obscure harbour pub to get him shanghaied. The plan is to get Willy drunk, make him accept a loan from the pub landlord and sign a receipt which is actually a blank contract committing him to service on board a ship. Bang’s dastardly scheme succeeds, and before Willy realises what is happening, he has become a slave on a half-rotten wreck of a ship, ‘The Octopus’. (Stumfilm.dk)

The story opens at a boarding school, where two of the lady students become inseparable companions. Six years later, Edith, one of the ladies, is wedded to the proprietor of the school of fencing, while the other, Yvonne, is studying for a singer's career. Six months later,the singer who has made a great impression, tires of her career, and makers her home with Edith and her husband. Yvonne later on falls a victim to temptation, and an illicit love henceforward exists between the pair. The tragic story ends in a duel between Edith and Yvonne, in which the former is fatally wounded.
