Edgar a un job minable de serveur dans un restaurant miteux. Sa femme est malade, ses voisins sont désagréables et sa liaison extraconjugale ne lui offre guère plus qu'une maigre satisfaction sexuelle. A 50 ans, Edgar a beau être un personnage de fiction, il en a ras-le-bol d'une existence aussi misérable. Il décide donc d'aller se plaindre à l'homme qui a crée son personnage. Il fait irruption chez Herman, l'écrivain, et sa femme, Suzie, pour lui expliquer qu'il veut en finir avec son mariage, qu'il désire une nouvelle petite amie, de nouveaux voisins, et qu'il en a assez d'être traité comme un paillasson par les clients du restaurant. Mais il va apprendre à ses dépens que sa vie est au-delà de la fiction...
