Lors de la fête du village de Mittendorf, le riche fermier Muralt danse avec la servante Maria. Il pense qu'elle est la bonne femme pour lui et envoie son contremaître Wolf la courtiser le lendemain . Cependant, Maria aime le fils du maire Lorenz et rejette la cour de Muralt. Bien que le maire ait choisi une autre épouse pour Lorenz, le mariage entre Lorenz et Maria est décidé. Le chargeur de mariage, qui va de maison en maison et lance personnellement les invitations au mariage, vient aussi chez Muralt. Lorenz a voulu se moquer de lui comme ça et a déjà parié que Muralt refuserait une invitation au mariage de son grand amour, mais il accepte. Après le mariage, il apparaît ivre à la noce et veut exiger sa danse avec la mariée.
