Le portier du grand hôtel " Atlantic " est très fier de ses prérogatives : il occupe une fonction prestigieuse, que son costume désigne aux yeux de tous. Dans son quartier, il est respecté et envié. Or, un matin, en arrivant à son travail, il constate qu'il a été remplacé. Le directeur de l'hôtel lui explique, sans ménagement, que cette mesure est due à son grand âge. On lui arrache sa somptueuse livrée et on le relègue au gardiennage des lavabos. C'est la pire des humiliations. Le soir venu, l'ex-portier vient en catimini récupérer sa livrée, afin de donner le change à son entourage. Mais une commère a été témoin de sa déchéance. Elle la révèle à tout le quartier, qui tourne en ridicule le pauvre homme. A bout de forces, il vient se terrer dans ses lavabos, où un veilleur de nuit le découvre, prostré...

In this film, the people of a Tyrolean town climb up into the nearby mountains, searching for a place where they can hold a picnic and a spring festival: ideally, a place where they can eventually erect dwellings and cultivate crops. Led by the local nobleman (Arthur Ehrens), they find an appropriate spot, and the festivities begin. Some children briefly perform a charming folk dance. Suddenly the Rübezahl arrives and threatens to kill all the townsfolk if they don't leave immediately.

The director and co-writer Lupu Pick plays musician Erik Paulsson, who loses his beloved son after a peaceful yet critical poetry reading is raided by the tsarist forces. Paulsson, beside himself with grief, kills the officer responsible and is sentenced to life, which will mean 18 years in prison before he is free again. While he is inside, by a strange quirk of fate, his daughter Karin falls in love with writer Sebald Brückner, the son of the state prosecutor, who indicted Paulsson and is a staunch advocate of the death penalty. The conflict between the fathers does not impair the relationship of the young couple. However, when Sebald’s long-desired success on the stage is threatened by a vengeful theatre director who had sexually harassed Karin, he is enraged and kills the other man in a fight. The prosecutor now must face the blow of losing his own son to the death penalty.
