Bessie Smith, légendaire chanteuse du blues, garde l’espoir, malgré le racisme et la violence.

À la mort de leurs parents, les petits Afro-Américains Rashad et Ant sont recueillis par leur oncle à Atlanta. Or, devant la négligence de ce dernier, les garçons doivent apprendre à se débrouiller seuls. Les années passent. Maintenant âgé de 17 ans, Rashad travaille dur, tous les soirs après ses cours, afin de payer les études d'Ant, de trois ans son cadet. Mais celui-ci n'a qu'une idée en tête: posséder toute la panoplie des vêtements à la mode, ainsi qu'une belle voiture. Ces rêves de richesse instantanée l'amènent à devenir dealer pour un gang de rue. Par ailleurs, chaque dimanche soir, Rashad retrouve trois copains dans un centre d'amusement pourvu d'une piste de patins à roulettes, où ils s'entraînent pour participer à une importante compétition annuelle.
