Roger Frison-Roche né à Paris en 1906 et s'installe à Chamonix à 17 ans. Il se fait vite adopter par les alpinistes locaux et devient le premier guide de la Compagnie à n'être pas né dans la vallée. Il est aussi un explorateur insatiable, amoureux des paysages comme des peuples, ayant voyagé du Hoggar aux campements Samis de Laponie. Et l'auteur, entre autres, du célèbre roman d'aventure Premier de Cordée ! Ce documentaire, composé d'images d'archives et d'entretiens, expose la vie prolifique d'un homme qui aura communiqué sa passion des montagnes par tous les moyens possibles. Une jeune journaliste native de Chamonix part sur les traces de Roger Frison-Roche. Elle rencontre des gens qui l'ont connu et d'autres qui ont suivi sa trace : des guides, le cinéaste et auteur Philippe Claudel, un réalisateur, sa famille ; on voyage en Laponie, en Algérie, à Chamonix.
