La vie est difficile et Francie est obligée de quitter l'école pour travailler dans un restaurant. Johnny disparaît un jour et meurt dans un hôpital alors que Katie attend un troisième enfant. Les beaux jours reviennent lorsque le policier Mac Shane demande la main de Katie.
