Zooni Ali Beg (Kajol), est une jeune kashemirienne aveugle qui décide, avec l'accord de ses parents, de participer à un voyage qui a pour but de visiter New Delhi, en Inde. Lors de son voyage, elle rencontre Rehan Khan (Aamir Khan), son guide, qui séduit par son charme, son éloquence et sa beauté décide de la courtiser. Zooni en tombe amoureuse. Après quelques péripéties, Zooni apprend que par une chirurgie laser elle pourrait voir, elle apprend la bonne nouvelle à ses parents qui décident de venir. Les parents de Zooni se rendent à l'hôpital, et Zooni ouvre ses yeux pour la première fois, elle voit pour la première fois ses parents. Mais ces derniers ont l'air inquiets, ils pleurent et Zooni comprend cela par de la joie, mais cela va plus loin. De plus Zooni est enceinte de Rehan.
