Japon, années 20. Médecin, Yukio vit entouré de ses parents et de sa femme, amnésique depuis un mystérieux incendie. Alors qu'une présence mystérieuse hante la maison, son père puis sa mère meurent dans des circonstances inexpliquées. Puis, Yukio est précipité au fond du puits du jardin par une "apparition" qui prend ensuite sa place...

À travers le portrait de trois femmes âgées dont celui de Yoko Morimoto, célèbre actrice venue se reposer dans son chalet de montagne et fil d'Ariane de cette histoire, évocation des thèmes universels de la vie, de la vieillesse et de la peur de mourir et regard ironique sur la société japonaise.

Almost all of the dialogue and narration is extracted from the original work, with only minor differences in the storyline as follows. Yashiro Ryusuke's own home is located on Y Koji. When he first accompanies Kanako on the road, Kagawa meets her in front of Yashiro's house, and Kamei also appears there. Dr Asano's wife did not show up. It is explained that Kagawa has two girls (in the original story, one is a student at a girls' school, but the gender of the other is unknown). The introduction of the 'one in 500 murderers' is told against the backdrop of Kindaichi excavating an air-raid shelter (which appears to have been made from a natural cave).

Keiko, a lonely single woman living in Tokyo, is taking the elevator up to her apartment one day when a couple of young thugs suddenly appear. They immediately assault her, dragging her into a stairwell and taking photographs of her in the throes of her ordeal. She leads them to an apartment inhabited by Miho, a woman she often sees in the building. The men burst in and, after repeatedly beating Miho’s partner, subject both women to endless rape and degradation. In the midst of their mutual torment, the hatred that Keiko and Miho share for each other explodes, revealing them both to be as ruthless as their captors.

Yasuda, un homme sans cesse rabaissé, vient de se faire éconduire par sa petite amie. Aizawa, employé dans une épicerie a des rêves de stars de la musique mais tombe dans la drogue tandis que Takeda, un yakuza, rate l’occasion de se distinguer lors de l’attaque de son Boss…
