Pour contrer cette menace, les Russes terminent la construction du sous-marin lance-missiles K-19. L'équipage est soumis à un rude entraînement imposé par le commandant Vostrikov. Les relations de ce dernier avec son second, Polenin, sont mauvaises. Près des côtes américaines, le sous-marin subit une très grave avarie. Coupés du monde, Vostrikov et ses hommes doivent affronter une fuite dans la zone du réacteur avec des moyens dérisoires.

Il ne s´agit pas d´être pro-américain ou pro-japonais, j´ai simplement voulu raconter la vérité. » Une vérité technologique, scientifique, militaire et politique qui se dessine dans les trois semaines précédant l´attaque, alors que le premier essai nucléaire vient de se dérouler dans le désert du Nouveau-Mexique, aux États-Unis. Le spectateur se retrouve alors dans la pièce où est prise la décision ultime, à bord de l´Enola Gay pendant son trajet fatidique, à l´intérieur de la bombe au moment de l´explosion, puis dans les rues dévastées d´Hiroshima.

He finds a kindred spirit in Princess Paloma (Juliet Cadzow), the village "looney," who, alas, is eventually carted away to an institution. Briefly fascinated by poetry and music, thanks to his lovely teacher Miss Balsibie (Sinead Cusack), Peter is disillusioned when he finds his teacher in the arms of her lover (and out of her clothing). The final blow to Peter's idealism comes when his grandfather's ship is repossessed. Despite the bleakness of his surroundings and his seemingly dead-end existence, however, Peter never completely lets go of his dreams, and the film ends on a positive note.
