The 1999 Formula One season was the 50th FIA Formula One World Championship season. It commenced on March 7, 1999, and ended on October 31 after sixteen races. The season saw the introduction of a new event to the World Championship calendar, the Malaysian Grand Prix. The drivers World Championship was won by Mika Häkkinen, although Eddie Irvine, David Coulthard and Heinz-Harald Frentzen all had a chance of clinching it. Ferrari won the constructors World Championship, which paved the way for the Michael Schumacher-era of Ferrari dominance at the start of the 21st century. Schumacher was injured during the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, suffering a broken leg in a crash, but returned before the end of the season.

The season saw a wave of emerging talent such as Pedro de la Rosa (Arrows), and notably Jarno Trulli (Jordan), who ran strong at the Nurburgring and Monaco respectively. But no one looked close to challenging the sport’s contemporary stars Michael Schumacher (Ferrari) and Mika Hakkinen (McLaren). With the aid of Ferrari’s master strategist Ross Brawn, Michael Schumacher’s persistence and determination clinched the championship title for the third time. What a season! Records tumbled, new boys rocked the establishment and one man wrote his name into the history book, Michael Schumacher - 9 wins, 123 points and 14 podium finishes! Not that he had it all his own way. The tyre war between Bridgestone and Michelin sent lap times tumbling and helped Williams break the stronghold of Ferrari and McLaren. 3 wins for Ralf made it 12 in total for the Schumacher family in 2001. Juan Pablo Montoya and Kimi Raikkonen staked their claims as stars of the future and Fernando Alonso shone at Minardi after they just made it in time for Australia. And if you though the return of traction control in Spain would take the edge off the racing, think again.

1999 saw Formula 1 celebrate 50 years as the World’s top motor racing series. The season was a classic and a worthy milestone, the most open in years, producing six winners and four title contenders. In the early rounds the Championship was fought out between Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher until the German's accident at the British round. Ferrari, who had a real possibility of winning the Drivers' World championship, were despondent but they had not taken into account Eddie Irvine rising to the challenge. In the end the Championship went down to the wire at the final race in Japan where Hakkinen and Irvine fought a psychological and tactical battle dividing the Drivers' and Constructors' Championship between them.

Tooned is an animated cartoon by McLaren starring Jenson Button, Sergio Pérez and comedian Alexander Armstrong. It aired on Sky Sports F1 before the start of each Formula 1 race. The first season, which starred former McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton aired from the 2012 British Grand Prix onwards. The second season aired from the 2013 British Grand Prix onwards. All episodes can be watched on McLaren's YouTube channel and the Sky Sports F1 website any time after the premiere. The episodes are a little more than 3 minutes long. On 16 May 2014 it was announced on McLaren's YouTube Channel that a season 3 was in progress. It was announced when Jenson Button was shown a picture of his 2014 team mate Kevin Magnussen's character on Tooned and also added that 'the production of Season 3 was going well'. In 2016 a 'one-off special',again starring Alexander Armstrong and Jenson Button,to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of James Hunt winning the Driver's World Championship,was produced,introducing current Driver Fernando Alonso to the world of Tooned!

The logo and the name of the programme is based upon the Tigerente or 'Tigerduck', created by German cartoonist Janosch.

The Team: A Season With McLaren is a 7 part TV series produced by John Gau Productions for the BBC during the 1993 Formula One season and first transmitted on BBC Two during November and December 1993. The series followed the team and regular drivers Ayrton Senna and Michael Andretti, as well as test driver Mika Häkkinen, giving a behind the scenes insight to the McLaren team.
