On his journey, he meets the very colorful character of (Janusz Gajos) a retired high school math teacher and a great enthusiast of the horse races. He dreams of returning to America as a somebody, but can only do so after wining a momentous prize. From then on the two friends endeavor to gain success. They discover true friendship. Together they fulfill Franks dream of winning at the horse races, which in turn allows Oliver to buy back his personal freedom. Having recovered from a dramatically ended marriage, the young man is able to open up to a new love.

Alors que le peintre est au sommet de son art et de sa gloire, la milice des Mousquetaires d'Amsterdam lui demande un portrait de groupe. Malgré sa réticence face à ces soldats amateurs et fats ne cherchant qu'à se pavaner, Rembrandt accepte : sa femme Saskia est enceinte, et cette toile monumentale assurerait un futur stable à cet enfant longtemps désiré. Mais le peintre a un mauvais pressentiment et sait déjà que cette toile ne sera pas qu'un simple portrait de groupe. Il ne sait pas peindre avec complaisance et pressent que ce tableau précipitera sa chute.

Sep 01, 1988After discussions with Schwartz, a producer from the West, screenwriter Stefan comes back to Poland. Everybody reminds him of his previous success: “The Flame”. The tired protagonist goes back to his wife, actress Ewa, who is eagerly awaiting him. Ewa goes to an audition which doesn’t turn out too well. On the next day, Stefan and his collaborators are wondering what to write a scenario about. Meanwhile, Stefan has a tooth ache. He decides to visit a dentist but is scared away by the price he has to pay for the treatment. Stefan still can’t find an idea for a scenario, and Ewa is not being cast. They decide to sell the car, but a man who takes their car out for a test drive doesn’t return. Stefan is changing ideas for the scenario constantly, he can’t make up his mind… at home, a pipe goes off… the wine he keeps in gallons blows up… the milicia (People’s Republic of Poland’s police) comes and general chaos ensues, as they are drowning in water and wine… which gives Stefan an idea…
