Alberto De Amicis

Alberto's marriage is a complete failure: his wife Elena is a hard woman influenced by her mother and sister who live with the married couple. Alberto is also experiencing financial problems and hopes for the help of a rich widow who is however interested in his sexual favours. Naturally Elena puts obstacles in his way and everything goes wrong. Alberto decides to change job then and becomes a sweets sales representative. Disillusioned with marital life he also changes his attitude towards women: he tells every woman he meets he is single.

Paolo Anselmi is a happily single man. He lives in a flat with a friend but is forced to leave when the friend gets married. He then goes to a boarding house where he flirts with a girl but ditches her when she proposes marriage. When he goes and visits his mother he finds out that she is also trying to find the right girl for him. Is he going to surrender this time?

The retired general Antonio Cavalli is a nuisance to his family: to his wife Francesca who still works, to his son and to his daughter-in-law. Then he finds a job in a building firm. Only by chance Cavalli finds out that his salary is paid by his wife to keep him busy. But the general is well known as a very reliable man, and Sandrelli, the firm's owner, uses him and his name to win a valuable contract. When Sandrelli is arrested, the general finds the money to honour his debt but he is robbed while he is going to the bank...

Gioia Fabbricotti gagne sa vie comme figurante à Cinecittà sous le nom de Tortorella, tout en rêvant à un avenir de diva. Le soir du réveillon, elle refuse la compagnie d'Umberto Pennazuto, un ancien acteur surnommé Infortunio pour sa capacité à provoquer de faux accidents et à escroquer les assurances. Infortunio a promis à son ami Lello, un pickpocket, de tenter un coup pendant la nuit de la Saint-Sylvestre. Les trois personnages se rencontrent par hasard et Tortorella entraîne ses compagnons à un bal masqué...

Augusto est à la tête d'un petit gang d'escrocs qui comprend par ailleurs Carlo «Picasso», un artiste raté, et Roberto, un joyeux luron, routier à ses heures. Tous les trois parcourent la campagne romaine, racontant d'invraisemblables histoires à des paysans crédules qu'ils délestent de quelques sous. Ils ont honte de leurs forfaits, non pas parce qu'illégaux, mais parce que trop petits. Un jour, las de cette vie minable, «Picasso» quitte ses complices pour rejoindre son épouse...
