Monsieur Arpel est féru de modernisme. Directeur d'une fabrique de tuyaux en plastique, il a doté sa maison de tous les perfectionnements techniques possibles à ce jour. Pourtant, cette maison pourvue de robots est loin d'apporter une atmosphère détendue à son fils, Gérard, 10 ans. Le beau-frère de monsieur Arpel, monsieur Hulot, fantasque et bohème, occupe un modeste deux pièces dans un quartier populaire. Il invite de temps à autre son jeune neveu, dressé à l'ordre rigoureux qui règne chez lui, à découvrir son domaine de fantaisie et de liberté. Sa sœur, maintenant madame Arpel, espère secrètement qu'il épousera sa voisine, mais c'est compter sans l'esprit discrètement récalcitrant et frondeur de Hulot, résolument épris de liberté...

By contrast, a neighbouring shop is filled with unhelpful staff overseen by an incompetent and lazy manager, Raymond Penny, who is more interested in horseracing than running his shop. Craggs is unimpressed by Penny and summons him to a meeting in London. Both Bullock and his domineering wife travel up to London as well, fearing that Penny will tell Craggs malicious stories about them.
