It’s June 1st, 1970, and Pisa is the epicenter of the movement Lotta Continua. There are rumors of an imminent coup d’état, and the most visible exponents fear being arrested before dawn. One of them is Pino Masi, a singer-songwriter who wrote the hit “La ballata del Pinelli.” He invites two high school students, Renzo Lulli and Fabio Gismondi, to flee Italy with him, and the three set off. A series of misunderstandings ensues, starting with an unnerving encounter with soldiers on their way to Rome for the national holiday the next day.

More importantly, this is the (true) story of a film theatre in Florence, The Universale, which was a cultural landmark in the city between the '60s and the '80s. It was a theater of its own kind, bringing together intellectuals, students, as well as the people from San Frediano, a well-known working-class Quartiere. Such unusual mixture among the cinema-goers also produced a sort of creative chaos, which is explored through the eyes of Tommaso, the projectionist's son.

Simona is a single mother in her early ‘40s who is wholly devoted to her son, Filippo. To get over her insecurities as a parent and make her son happy on his eighth birthday, she decides to throw him a birthday party in their small flat and invite over his school friends and their parents. For Simona, this birthday is about to pose quite the surprising dilemma between allowing her son to embrace his true self and a mother’s fierce desire to protect her child from their potentially cruel surroundings. Été 2008. Trois amis ont la chance d'une vie : faire la première partie de leur groupe punk hardcore préféré. Au tout dernier moment, le concert tombe à l'eau mais Edo, Iac et Miche ne baissent pas les bras. Pour eux, le punk est plus que de la musique, c'est un style de vie. En un clin d'œil, ils décident d'amener le concert à Grosseto, la ville silencieuse et conservatrice où ils vivent. Néanmoins, toutes les difficultés et les problèmes auxquels ils sont confrontés sur leur chemin risquent de faire exploser leur vie et leur amitié.
