Jan 15, 2022Les Noces de Figaro compte parmi les opéras les plus emblématiques du répertoire. Brahms en parlait comme d’un « miracle » et la plainte de la Comtesse résonne encore aujourd’hui comme une des pages musicales les plus déchirantes. C’est en reprenant la comédie de Beaumarchais qui fut à l’origine d’un scandale dans la société parisienne, que Mozart et son librettiste Da Ponte entamèrent leur première collaboration. La pièce avait été interdite par Joseph II en 1785 au Théâtre de Vienne. Est‑ce parce qu’elle exposait trop sur le devant de la scène les contradictions d’un régime déjà vacillant, prêt à sombrer avec la Révolution française ? Netia Jones conserve l’essence même de la pièce de Beaumarchais en questionnant avec humour mais non sans espièglerie les rapports humains, dans une production qui vient confondre réalité et fiction au point de se demander, comme le Comte : « Jouons‑nous une comédie ? »

La Tempête et Le Songe d'une nuit d'été. Le casting de stars est dirigé par David Daniels dans Prospero, Joyce DiDonato dans Sycorax, Danielle de Niese dans Ariel, Luca Pisaroni dans Caliban et le légendaire Plácido Domingo dans Neptune. Le spécialiste de la musique ancienne William Christie dirige cette éblouissante première mondiale, conçue et mise en scène par Phelim McDermott et Julian Crouch.

Marina Rebeka en Donna Anna, Barbara Frittoli en Donna Elvira et Mojca Erdmann en Zerlina forment le trio de femmes séduites par Giovanni. Ramón Vargas joue Don Ottavio, le fiancé d'Anna, et Joshua Bloom dans Masetto et Štefan Kocán dans le rôle du Commendatore autour du casting. Met le chef d'orchestre principal Fabio Luisi dirige l'orchestre et joue du clavecin continuo.

La Clemenza di Tito
Aug 20, 2006The 1791 La Clemenza di Tito (or 'The Clemency of Titus') marked Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's final opera seria. With a libretto by Metastasio (edited slightly by Caterino Mazzolà), the work dramatizes the palace intrigues surrounding emperor Titus's attempts to coronate a new bride and the envious Vitellia's attempts to have Titus assassinated (with the help of Titus's friend Sextus) following the deposition of Vitellia's emperor father. Stage director Martin Kušej mounted Tito in August 2003, at the Felsenreitschule in Salzburg; a film of that live performance now appears in this home video release. The cast includes Michael Schade as Titus, Vesselina Kasarova as Sextus and Dorothea Roschmann as Vitellia. The Wiener Staatsopernchor, under the baton of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, provides musical accompaniment; Jens Kilian designed the sets.

En 2010, 37 ans après sa création elle remportait à nouveau un triomphe à l'Opéra Bastille avec une nouvelle génération d'interprètes : Ludovic Tézier (le comte Almaviva), Barbara Frittoli (la Comtesse), Ekaterina Siurina (Susanna), Luca Pisaroni (Figaro) et Karine Deshayes (Chérubin). A la direction musicale, Philippe Jordan obtient le meilleur de l'Orchestre et du Chour de l'Opéra national de Paris. En bonus de cette édition, une interview d'Humbert Camerlo qui a longuement travaillé avec Giorgio Strehler et a réalisé la mise en scène pour cette reprise.

Son héroïne très appréciée Angelina (Elīna Garanča) doit faire face non seulement à de méchantes demi-sœurs, mais aussi à un père extravagant et farfelu, Don Magnifico (Alessandro Corbelli). Et dans cette version, le prince (Lawrence Brownlee) et son valet (Simone Alberghini) échangent leurs identités, ce qui provoque une délicieuse confusion sans fin. Avec la délicieuse production de contes de Cesare Lievi et la direction experte de Maurizio Benini, tout est aussi léger et délicieux qu'un merveilleux soufflé musical.

Here Nikolaus Harnoncourt, renowned for his analytical approach to the search for the core of the music, interprets Mozart’s last opera. Martin Kušej, who is acclaimed for his theatre productions directs the production. Nikolaus Harnoncourt identifies with Mozart’s score as both an extremely knowledgeable musician and a conductor who invariably plays an active part in helping to shape the drama. Together with the Vienna Philharmonic, he savours the miracles of Mozart’s late work, bringing out its instrumental colours and effects and at the same time stimulating his singers while proving a solicitous accompanist.

Jan 04, 2020This hilarious contemporary version of Francesco Cavalli's baroque opera Hercules in Love was commissioned on occasion of the marriage of Louis XIV, the Sun King, to Maria Theresa of Spain. The original production took two years to complete and was at the time the greatest show ever performed in Europe. Directed by David Alden, this surreal production is a triumph of commedia buffa resplendent with decorative and symbolic elements, and complemented by Constance Hoffman's exceptional costumes. Led by Ivor Bolton, a master of baroque music, the chorus of De Nederlandse Opera and Concerto Köln give a sublime performance. With Luca Pisaroni's (Ercole) singing being heroic and melodious in turn, and Veronica Cangemi as a splendid Iole, this is an outstanding production by the DNO. Sep 20, 2012Rinaldo (HWV 7) is an opera by George Frideric Handel composed in 1711. It is the first Italian language opera written specifically for the London stage. The libretto was prepared by Giacomo Rossi from a scenario provided by Aaron Hill. The work was first performed at the Queen's Theatre in London's Haymarket on 24 February 1711. The story of love, battle and redemption set at the time of the First Crusade is loosely based on Torquato Tasso's epic poem Gerusalemme liberata (Jerusalem Delivered), and its staging involved many original and vivid effects. It was a great success with the public, despite negative reactions from literary critics hostile to the trend towards Italian entertainment in English theatres.
