Feb 03, 1994L'histoire part sur une sorte de quiproquo. Le jeune et insouciant Wong Fei Hung intervertit le paquet d'un voleur, contenant un sceau impérial, avec le sien contenant du ginseng. Les deux hommes se retrouveront et échangeront leur paquet. Le voleur explique alors à Fei Hung qu'il a voulu sauver le sceau, un des bijoux du patrimoine chinois convoité par des colons anglais, qui font passer diverses oeuvres d'art chinoises en Angleterre....

Tous les deux sont férus d'arts martiaux et chacun tente de convaincre sa moitié que sa technique est supérieure. Ho Tao a physiquement le dessus et son épouse décide de repartir au Japon pour se perfectionner. Elle ne reviendra qu'une fois certaine de vaincre. Entre temps, le jeune homme aidé d'un ami (Cheng Hong Yip) élabore un stratagème pour la ramener près de lui : il lui lance un défi. Si elle parvient à le battre dans une seule discipline martiale, il reconnaîtra la supériorité des arts martiaux japonais sur les arts martiaux chinois. Un ninja (Yasuaki Kurata) tombe malencontreusement sur la lettre de défi. Il va alors constituer une équipe de redoutables artistes martiaux et se rendre en Chine pour rencontrer Ho Tao ...

Lors de cette cérémonie, Ip Man affronte les grand maîtres du Sud et fait alors la connaissance de Gong Er en qui il trouve son égal. Très vite l’admiration laisse place au désir et dévoile une histoire d’amour impossible. Peu de temps après, le Grand maître Baosen est assassiné par l’un de ses disciples, puis, entre 1937 et 1945, l’occupation japonaise plonge le pays dans le chaos.
