Au Brésil, à la fin du XIXe siècle. Petit paysan ruiné, Francisco Manoel da Silva gagne le surnom de « Cobra Verde » en tuant un homme dans les mines d'or. Pour se débarrasser de lui, ce dernier l'envoie au Dahomey, en Afrique, sous prétexte de réactiver le trafic des esclaves. Contre toute attente, Cobra Verde gagne l'amitié du souverain local, Bossa Ahadee, un homme fou et tyrannique, en l'aidant à résoudre un conflit frontalier.
