Dante, qui a bon cœur mais qui n'est pas très loquace, est heureux de conduire le bus scolaire pour un groupe d'enfants handicapés mentaux, tout en ayant le sentiment de manquer de vie et d'amour. Il est donc très excité lorsqu'après avoir failli être renversé par sa voiture, il rencontre Maria, qui semble tout de suite l'adorer. Il est bientôt invité dans sa somptueuse villa de Palerme, ne se doutant guère que cela fait partie d'un complot. Il ressemble étrangement au mari de Maria, un gangster colombophile, et il serait commode pour eux que le mafieux, en forme de Dante, soit vu mort et enterré.

The teenage boy, Giuseppe, lives with his mother in Cammarata, a Sicilian mountain village. His father left the family years ago, and has since then settled down as a guest worker in West-Germany and established a family. Under local moral rules, Maria is a so-called "white widow", who must stay faithful to her husband even if he never returns to her again. Maria and the newly arrived young doctor fall in love with each other. Their happiness is frowned upon not only by Giuseppe, but the entire village as well as the distant husband.

The true story of Rosario Livatino, a young judge in Sicily in the early 1980s, who have been nicknamed 'The Boy Judge' from the President of the Republic. He's strictly incorruptible, working hard and refusing even to shake hands with suspects. He then starts a number of investigations that lead him to touch the mafia power in the area, and then to personal war with the hidden organization.
