1943, aux confins de l’Ukraine et de la Pologne. Fuyant le ghetto et la déportation, Yulia confie son fils Hugo, 11 ans, à une amie d’enfance, Mariana, 35 ans, qui se prostitue dans une maison close. Reclus dans un réduit privé de fenêtres, attenant à la chambre de la jeune femme, son existence est suspendue aux bruits et aux scènes qu’il devine à travers la cloison : avec l’imagination pour seule ressource, Hugo prend conscience à la fois des massacres en train de se perpétrer et des mystères de la sexualité. Lorsque le jour pointe, Mariana l’invite dans sa chambre, et l’enveloppe de douceur et de volupté. Bientôt la vie aura raison de la mort, bientôt Hugo sera devenu un jeune homme.
