In 1752, a ship arrives in Brazil, bringing doctor and writer Gaspar de Fróes. He keeps a diary about the dangerous trip, the diseases and hunger aboard, his impressions of the new country, and the political struggle between the crowns of Castela and Portugal. In Brazil, he is going to fall in love with the wife of a Portuguese officer.

After her boyfriend's death, a successful executive finds some unfinished scripts in the dead man's computer, and decides to make a film of them. Her relationship with the world of movie-making is going to change her life.

In the mid-1870s, Jacobina, daughter of German immigrants, became leader of a sect that believed in healing the body by cleansing the soul. After having a divine vision and speaking to Jesus, she changes her appearance and manners, disturbing the conservative population of the place. After the death of opponents of her sect, local authorities decide to take action against her and her followers.

Based on the memoirs of Garibaldi, by Alexandre Dumas, the film tells the story of the withdrawal of republican troops from Laguna (SC), during the Farroupilha Revolution, in November and December 1839.
