The chamberlain Carl Johan Stjärna is a poor aristocrat who has to resort to borrowing money from his manservant Frans to afford champagne and restaurant visits. Frans has told his fiance Irene that he is an aristocrat which leads to some complications, not least because Irene has told Frans she is a rich land owner's daughter, although she is in a housemaid.

Björn Norell, a bookish assistant to an art dealer, is fired because of his inability to find the third of a trio of Buddha statues. In order to get his job back, Norell, goes on a hunt to find it in order to get his job back. Meanwhile, the art dealer has sent his daughter Ulla after him to retrieve the statue. Jocke has grown up in one of Stockholm's rough suburbs. Nowadays he spends the daytime getting into trouble at school and going into Stockholm in the evenings and getting into even more trouble. After being sentenced to prison he meets Tony. After their release they begin a series of robberies.

Kurre and Inga are engaged to be married. However, as they are very poor, they can't afford it just yet. They live separate, both in small apartments with a friend. Inga works at an office and Kurre at a small factory. Inga has a liability to be late in the mornings and this gets her into some trouble at the office, because of her very strict boss. This, along with the fact that another girl starts to court Kurre puts their relationship to the test, a crisis which is easier said than done to solve.
