L'histoire commence il y a quelques décennies, dans une communauté de langue allemande des États-Unis. Dieter (Matt Klemp) et Philip (Andrew Woodhouse) sont deux copains inséparables, jusqu'au jour où Philip se fend d'une déclaration d'amour qui n'est pas très bien reçue. Mais Dieter est bouleversé. Alors que son ami torturé s'évade vers la ville, il demeure à New Ulm, désemparé, incapable de faire un choix. Sur ces entrefaites débarque d'Allemagne Udo (Ralf Shirg), garçon désoeuvré apparemment incapable de se prendre en charge, mais à certains égards plus sûr de son identité. À son contact, Dieter va accomplir le chemin sentimental qui le ramènera vers Philip.
