Le jeune Mike, treize ans, assiste en cachette à l'enterrement d'un ami. Après la cérémonie, il voit un colosse s'emparer du cercueil, qu'il soulève comme une plume. Le soir venu, Mike s'introduit dans le grand bâtiment au centre du cimetière et y découvre des activités déconcertantes. Il fait part de ses soupçons à son grand frère Jody, qui retourne avec lui au mausolée. Les deux frères acquièrent la conviction que des forces inconnues s'emparent des défunts dans un but innommable.
