Dans un quartier calme, Maharaja, un barbier respecté d'âge moyen, vit avec sa fille Jothi et Lakshmi. Lorsque Maharaja rapporte à la police que des intrus masqués l'ont attaqué et volé Lakshmi, les autorités rejettent cette affirmation, doutant de l'authenticité de sa perte.
