Sur le paquebot qui l'amène à Alger, Pierre Hoffer rencontre Claudie Duvernet. Tandis que le jeune homme, à court de ressources, est reçu par son oncle Christian, riche colon, Claudie assiste à l'ouverture d'un testament qui l'institue légataire universel au grand dam de ses cousins Manuel et Diane. Pierre éprouve des difficultés dans son travail, mais il comprend la grandeur de sa tâche lorsque Christian Hoffer lui retrace l'épopée de la colonisation. Il retrouve Claudie, lui avoue son amour, constate qu'il est partagé. Cependant les cousins ont juré la perte de la jeune fille et tentent de l'enlever pour la faire périr. Ils échouent grâce à Pierre et l'oncle Hoffer donne aux fiancés la permission d'être heureux.

Paulin Broquet, the great Parisian detective, has brought the notorious bandit, Zigomar, to justice. Determined not to let the law punish him, he had taken poison in the Hall of Justice. Then he was brought to a hospital where he lay motionless and was visited by hundreds of persons. Among the visitors was a slender woman, dressed in black, who secreted herself in the hospital, and, when all the others had gone, went to the bedside of Zigomar and administered an antidote for poisoning.

The next dastardly trick of Zigomar was to secure the safe which carried $50,000 belonging to the owner of the Grand African Circus, which he had won as a prize. He and La Rosario, disguised as servants, joined the circus and by the aid of a powerful elephant managed to get the safe to a manhole into which is was lowered to Zigomar and La Rosario.

After a time of suspended activities, Zigomar attempted to rob the biggest bank in Paris; but in this he was frustrated by the detective. Swearing vengeance he tried to wreck the train upon which the detective was traveling, but one of the detective's spies got wind of it and warned him.

Nick Carter, the famous detective, is ordered to prosecute the gang of Zigomar. Carter gets into various thorny situations but manages to escape every time, helped by Olga, a former girlfriend of Zigomar. Carter finally manages to trap Zigomar and Zigomar is arrested. However, Zigomar avoids going to court by apparently poisoning himself.

Lantier quitte Gervaise pour Virginie. Gervaise part au lavoir où elle fait l’objet des railleries de cette dernière. Les deux femmes se battent. Gervaise se remarie avec Coupeau, mais la haine de Virginie reste tenace…

L'abbaye de Saint-Jean-la-Rivière menace de fermer ses portes. Ce qui serait une véritable catastrophe pour ses pensionnaires, tous de vieux comédiens sans ressource.
